Cayuga Lake 6/5, 6/7 (AM); Owasco Lake 6/6
Guided the past three days for lake trout. Fishing has generally been good on both Cayuga and Owasco Lakes. As I’ve said many times before, daily weather conditions will often dictate how “the bite” goes.
Cayuga Lake out of Long Point 6/5: Had an excellent day of laker jigging with Ron and his daughter Rachel. We are in the midst of a heat wave but fortunately the wind kept us comfortable for most of the day. Twenty nine solid lake trout were landed today with decent numbers of fish in the 28″ to 29″ range. We had luck with a variety of colors. Most fish came from less than 100′ of water. Rachel had a couple of deep-hooked fish that we kept for her grill. Fish continue to be feeding on alewives pretty much exclusively, which is typically the case this time of year. A lot of boats have been out on Cayuga lately. It makes sense with Seneca fishing relatively poorly for lake trout.

6/6 Owasco Lake out of Emerson Park: Although we had great fishing yesterday, we wanted to try a different lake today. Ron has fished Owasco Lake numerous times with me for both lakers and pike. Rachel hadn’t been there with us before, so we met up around 6:30 am and fished a 6 hour day. Fishing was slow to begin, although Rachel nabbed a 20″er in pretty short order. We had a few dropped fish, with Ron dropping 4 before landing one. Fortunately the bite got better and in the last hour of the day Ron managed to land 3 nice fish in a row up to around 27″+. I heard the AM bite on Cayuga was slower today, so the tougher AM bite might have been a weather factor.

6/7 Cayuga Lake out of Long Point: Guided Mike, Bill and Dave for a half day today out of Long Point. I hadn’t seen Mike and his crew in a good 6 to 7 years when he called me. He figured it’d been two or three years since we’d been out! That’s how fast time whizzes by as you age. I checked my records and had to go way back to find his info.
The guys fished yesterday and had a slow day. Usually they do well here, so they figured they’d get a refresher trip. We figured out what the problem/issue was and they’ll be good to go for the rest of their week here. All in all we had a solid morning of laker fishing with 12 to 13 fish landed. Most were around 24″ to 26″, with a couple down to 20″ and one around 27″. Everything was released today and we didn’t take any photos. Boat traffic was a lot lighter. Most of our fish came from around 50′ out to around 90′.
