Cayuga Lake out of Long Point 7/22
Back out again for day 2 with Anthony (“Antknee”), Dom and Tom. Fishing started out promising with Dominic nabbing a couple lakers in short order. Then Tom hooked a very nice fish. He’d bring it up near the boat – it’d run out a bunch of drag, he’d bring it up again and it’d run back out. A big laker is a very capable fighting fish! I slipped the net under a 32″ beauty that we quickly released after a couple pics. Another fish was landed but that was about it. Fishing remains fairly slow for Cayuga Lake in July.
Some encouraging news is that I am not seeing a whole lot of lampreys or lamprey wounding thus far this season on the lake trout. Once the August “pre-spawn bite” picks up, I’ll have a better idea as to what’s going on. But I am cautiously optimistic. Water clarity remains an issue on Cayuga Lake though we fortunately missed the massive wave of showers that came through both north and south of us today. A bullet was dodged! Hopefully we won’t see too much of the predicted possible heavy rains tomorrow night. Cooler temperatures may help the bloom to subside – it really didn’t seem too bad today. Weed mats and “debris fields” are still issues as well. Some strong winds would help remedy this. Fleas didn’t seem to be too much of an issue though they are around. Best action was fairly deep today – 85′ to 95′ or so, though we did have some cooler temps in closer.
