Cayuga Lake out of Myers Park 4/12 PM
Got out with my buddy Todd for just under 4 hours of fishing starting around 1:45 pm. Cayuga’s water level is about a foot under full pool. Expect it to be at normal pool after the rains that we are forecast to get over the next couple days. Park personnel have improved the launch docks with some nice rubber wrapped around the wood. They do a great job with this park.
Hard to believe it, but I hadn’t been on lower Cayuga Lake in April yet. I fish Cayuga a lot throughout the winter and enjoy trying some different lakes in the spring. We checked out a few different stretches of lake and had some good angling. I nabbed a hard fighting 24″ lake trout in our first area. Todd lost a nice salmon that appeared to me to be around 24″ as well, though he thought maybe 22″.
In our second area we found good numbers of 16″ to 17″ salmon. We caught our fish today on stickbaits, tube jigs and swim jigs. Fishing was very solid with around 11 chunky (all sublegal) salmon landed and my one laker. We had fly-gear with us but never wound up breaking it out. Fly-fishing would have been good today. I kept my laker and it had a large alewife in its stomach. Still no real signs of lamprey activity. A few other boats were out. Trollers were out in droves this morning but with the holiday most folks were off the water by the afternoon. Fun day and it certainly cured the cabin fever!
