Cayuga Lake out of Myers Park 8/18 AM
Guided a 1/2-day trip out of Myers with what appears to be my annual U.N. group – I had Sergei, Veselin and Ahmed, all from different countries and all residing in the U.S. now. That’s the great thing about fishing – it’s in our DNA, and so many of us have that in common.
Fishing today was a continuation of what I’ve been seeing on Cayuga Lake over the past week or so since the bloom has cleared up. Moments of decent fishing interspersed with lots of neutral to slightly negative fish. Veselin was out with us last year (Ahmed was not.) Last year we had a solid catch of fish but Veselin zeroed. Today we started things off great – Veselin and Ahmed doubled up! It was awesome and got the monkey off of Veselin’s back. He wasn’t done, however – his next fish was a brute! After a good fight he landed a 32″ lake trout that weighed 10lbs 8oz. This fish had a huge lamprey attached, which the guys kept to eat. Lamprey are excellent eating, but 95% of people can’t get past their appearance, but google “eating lamprey” if you don’t believe me or have some questions about it.
After that, it was a pretty slow go. Ahmed nabbed another decent fish and we were all happy when Sergei caught one too. After that we had a few hits and a lot of chasers, but nothing solid. We worked water from 70′ out to 130′. We tried some areas I hadn’t fished in years and found good numbers of trout pretty much everywhere, although we concentrated on the lower lake today. We were the only boat that had launched out of Myers when we got underway just after 7:45 am. Once we got back to the launch at around 12:30 pm, only one other boat had gone out. The forecast didn’t look promising, but we only had a few drops of rain and intermittent sunshine. Can’t say it helped the bite much. Best colors were white/chartreuse and black. No hits on chartreuse, Arkansas Shiner or Alewife.
Great to start the day with a double!!!
Skunked last time out, but LUNKER this time!
We will see how the bite progresses – we have a major cold front coming in this week. We are looking at a high of 62 degrees on Tuesday! Lows will be around 52 and 48 for Monday and Tuesday nights according to NOAA. We’ll see what pans out.
Saturday August 24th is open, as is the 26th – 29th of August, then we’re on to September. These Cayuga Lake fish need to eat! The lakers will be spawning in October, so September should prove to be hot fishing. I’m guessing that the bite will heat up once this cold front goes through and our temperatures start to moderate again, but who knows? This year, just about anything seems possible.
