Cayuga Lake out of Myers Park 9/13 AM
Guided Steve, Brad and “Roddie” for a 1/2-day-trip starting just after 7:30 am. Steve has been out with me quite a few times over the years; Brad once and today was Roddie’s first time out. He has a place on Cayuga Lake and occasionally will cast from his dock. When a fish gets sent to Cornell for pathology – aka cause of disease or death, Roddie is the man that figures it out – whether it’s VHS or something else, he’s the guy that NY State uses when they have a fish kill issue, so it was neat to have him on board and pick his brain a bit.
We had a very good day of “fishing” today – plenty of hits and some short hook-ups, and decent “catching” as well, with everybody landing at least a couple fish. The action wasn’t hot and heavy, but none of us were complaining. As has been the case lately, fish have come on multiple colors. Depths we fished ranged from 90′ or so out to close to 150′. Fish ran from around 22″/23″ up to 28″ if I remember correctly. One nice rainbow took a few swirls after Brad’s lure towards the end of the trip. Steve had the most fish, Roddie the first and Brad the biggest, so everyone got a trophy today! Fish are definitely getting ready to spawn and the females are fat with eggs. It’s probably one of the few times when I can “sex” the lakers to some extent. One thing I’ve noticed though, is that eggs weigh less than a bunch of alewives in a fish’s body, so a fat fish stuffed with alewives will usually weigh more than an equally fat fish ready to spawn.

This Sunday remains open! After that, I have next Tuesday through Thursday and lastly the 28th of September to close out the month. Keep in mind, that September 28th has been designated by NY DEC as a Free Fishing Day and no licenses are required – whether for residents or non-residents. If you’re a non-resident, it’s like getting a nice little discount for your trip!
