Cayuga Lake out of Myers Park 9/22 AM
Well, fishing for us on Cayuga Lake was fair to good at best on Friday, very good yesterday and downright excellent today! The bite was really firing on all cylinders for John, his wife Jennifer and one of their sons, Odin. Odin is only 8-years-old, which is usually younger than I guide, but I’ve been guiding John and his boys for a good decade and John knows his kids and what the fishing entails on my boat. I had the same group out on Owasco Lake on May 26th earlier this year and Odin caught one then. Everybody really got into the action today with John and Jennifer starting us off. We didn’t think anyone would top Jenn’s 31″ laker, but lo and behold, Odin nabbed a 32″. At first, John was helping Odin by supporting the rod as he reeled. However, as Odin got into fish number 2, 3, 4 and more, it was all him – including his 32″er. John kept a bunch of fish and was good to go after maybe 3 hours, but as I filleted and put gear away, Odin kept fishing and nabbing fish – at times hooking one on consecutive drops maybe 3 times in a row. Great day and a few of my friends were out there and got into the great fishing as well. Space Alien (Chartreuse Head/White Money Minnow body) and Reverse Space Alien (from the alternate universe) with a White Head and Chartreuse body did the trick.
We shall see how the fishing holds up with the seasonal weather (cold front) coming in tonight. This coming Saturday, September 28th remains open. It’s a “Free Fishing Day” – NYS encourages people to get offline and outside by having a few of these a year. It’s a great way to save a few bucks and enjoy the colors out there, which are coming along slowly but surely. 85′ to 135′ was best for us today. No sign of non-lakers for us, although we might have had a rainbow on for a few seconds. A friend of mine had a nice salmon follow him in, so some are around. I’m not expecting many salmon up the tribs this fall, but you never know. Rainbow numbers have been superb out on the lake all year long. Browns are still down a bit from past highs, but fishing’s been better than last year.
