Skaneateles Lake 11/7

Reports

Guided Gordon on what has been an annual fall trip for quite a few years now.  He brought his nice Orvis Helios fly-rod and fly-fished for probably 2/3rds of the day.  He mainly casted around wind-blown shallow, rocky areas.  Bass were fairly cooperative and he caught some decent fish mainly running 14″ to maybe 16″.  A few perch were also in the mix.  No sign of trout, salmon or walleyes today.  Later in the day, he worked some jigs and caught enough good-sized perch for a decent meal.  Not much has changed since yesterday – fish are moving deeper or shallower depending on the wind/sun conditions.  Fishing pressure was light today.  The “leaf hatch” wasn’t bad either.

This weekend right through Veteran’s Day remains open for trips.  According to my buddy Todd, lake trout action was hot on Cayuga a couple days ago with fish gobbling bait with abandon.  It’s still too warm (water temps) for salmon fishing.  Pike and Tiger Musky fishing remains very solid.  I even had an encouraging pike report from Seneca Lake, which is great to see. As always, I will guide throughout the winter, weather-depending!

Region 7 staff have told me that it’s likely that the docks will stay in on Skaneateles and Otisco Lake for perhaps a couple weeks yet, as long as the forecasts are calling for moderate weather.  I can’t promise anything (so you must always be prepared for the docks to be pulled this time of year), but that’s what they’re hoping for.  Once the real cold stuff approaches, you can be sure the docks will get pulled.  Kudos to the DEC Operations Unit for allowing sportsmen to take advantage of this mild fall without the inconvenience of not having docks in!  If I hear anything regarding the docks being removed, I will report it ASAP.

Gordon on with a nice hard-fighting smallmouth bass on the fly!
