Cayuga Lake out of Long Point State Park 3/29 Midday

Guided out of Long Point for my first time this year.  Water levels are up at 382.14'.  For people that have no idea what that means, in a nutshell, Cayuga Lake is launchable out of Long Point, Union Springs and Myers.  It would still be low out of Cayuga Lake State Park.  Another foot or so should be right around full-pool.

Today I had Chris and his nephew Ray, both of whom were out with me on a salmon trip out of Watkins Glen last March.  We had a nice, steady, solid pick of lake trout today with double-digits landed and fish running up to 30".  Fish were in average condition for this time of year.  They are "waking up" from winter dormancy and gradually starting to feed.  I did not clean any fish today, but usually we see one or two alewives and/or round gobies and perhaps a perch on occasion in fish this time of year.  In a couple weeks, the story will likely change and these fish will be gorging themselves on alewives.

We had a lot of fun onboard today as usual, and Ray got some redemption after doing a Canadian Guided Trip last year which would up with him being the "burbot-King" and the butt of the "can't catch lakers" jokes.  I have never caught a burbot, so it is on my species list.  I've caught pollock in the ocean, which seem like very similar fish.  Some of the lake trout fought very well today, tearing out some drag.  We worked water from around 130' to 160'.  I rarely find it necessary to go deeper than that.
