Cayuga Lake 4/28, 29
Guided Steve and Dave for two back-to-back 1/2-day trips. We targeted lake trout out of Long Point on 4/28 and then salmon/trout out of Myers Park on 4/29. Here’s the report:
4/28: We got underway around 9:15 am with light winds and sun. I knew right where I wanted the guys fishing, so we made a good run. In short order we had fish and in some areas bait under us. Unfortunately, we could not get any of the fish to grab! I might have spent more time (hindsight is 20/20) moving the guys looking for shallower bait/fish than I should have, but either way, action was very tough. Fish were chasing but not hitting. On the morning, Dave had one hit and that was it. Two of my friends on the water did ok using their electronics and timing the chases of the fish. But if you weren’t doing that (and we did a bit of it…) forget it! Very tough fishing for us and everything was shut down by 11:30 am or so. We tried some other areas and depths with half-hearted chases, but no fish. Unfortunately, it happens. Every year I seem to get skunked once or twice for lakers – usually either on Cayuga during the bloom or Owasco or Seneca Lakes on tough days. Go figure! Hopefully we got that out of the way for the year! At least it was a gorgeous day to be out and the loons were everywhere.
4/29: Today we decided on Myers Park just after 8 am, due mainly to the wind forecasts for southerlies around 16 mph gusting into the mid-20s. We were hoping to give the lakers another shot, but decided on salmon instead. The guys reminded me that last year, when we did both a full and a half-day on lakers, we landed something like 34 fish! Quite the difference this year!
The catching wasn’t great today but the fishing was very good. Dave doesn’t fish a whole lot apart from ice-fishing. He managed a 21″ landlocked salmon that was a chunker, weighing 4lbs 3oz! It was fat! Great fight too. Steve nabbed a small, but legal rainbow that we released. Some laker follows were had along with some other follows from browns and also a few other salmon hookups/hits. Action was pretty steady even though we only got the two fish to the boat. Water temps ran the gamut from 49 on the south end up to maybe 43 a bit further north.
Dave with a stellar fat salmon!
