Cayuga Lake out of Long Point 10/4 midday

Guided my old friend from way back in elementary school, Chris, along with our high school friend Jim and his friend Barb for a 1/2-day trip.  We were planning on starting at 8:30 am, but they missed their exit so that put us back to 9 am.  A surprisingly high number of boats went out of Long Point today and I'm guessing it was due to the gorgeous weather!   A friend on Seneca Lake said there were quite a few boats trolling around Watkins Glen today as well.  Wednesday is the day that temperatures are forecast to dip down into more typical October temps, with highs in the low-60s and lows in the upper-30s and 40s.  This is the last great weekend weather-wise in the 10-day forecast at this point in time.

Fishing was fair today.  We caught some very nice fish, but the bite was sporadic and fish were largely neutral.  Chris started us off with a nice wild rainbow that hit deep and fought like a lake trout.  I kept thinking lake trout - it actually never crossed my mind that it could've been anything else, when lo and behold I get ready to net it, and I see silver!  Chris took this 24"er home for dinner.  Jim got us going with lakers with a smaller one around 21" or so.  Barb dropped a good fish.  Actually we had quite a few drops today.  Some may have been smaller lakers doing some tail-grabbing.  I'm not sure.  Jim hooked up with a large fish that took some good runs and really pulled hard.  Thankfully it stayed on the line!  I slipped the net under a 31.5" laker that Jim kept for dinner.  It was a wild fish and had eggs in it.  After that we had more hook-ups and another rainbow and laker come aboard.  Not a hot bite by any means, but solid enough - especially given our late start.  The thermal out of the south blew for most of our half-day trip.

Chris with a nice 24" rainbow to kick off our day!

Jim with the first lake trout of the day

Jim bloodied up my boat good with this fish! 31.5" and wild!
