Guided Jordan and her father Chuck out of Long Point starting just after 9 am. As a last minute addition, Jordan's 5-year old son Miles joined us. I've never taken out somebody that young (he wasn't fishing) but talking to her gave me the sense that she knew he'd be alright, and he wound up being a fun addition to the trip. I view that kind of thing on a case-by-case basis. Most times, I'm not taking out anyone younger than 8 or so.
I've had a few reports from past clients over the last few days ranging from very tough fishing to good fishing. Lake trout fishing can get challenging in May, due to the sheer volume of laker-friendly water temperatures found from top to bottom and virtually end to end of the lake. Finding baitfish is usually the key to a successful day.
As we motored out, Chuck asked me what the limit was on lake trout. That's often the kiss of death in terms of the day, for reasons unknown to me! When people talk about limits, for some reason we tend to have a tough bite! Fortunately that wasn't the case today!
We wound up having some of the best fishing I've seen this season thus far on Cayuga Lake. Jordan landed the first fish and then missed 4. But after a while, they got more and more active. We wound up filling a limit of lakers ranging from 26" to 29", less one 24"er. Once they landed fish number ten, we were done. Chuck nabbed his limit early, so he watched me clean fish as we waited for Jordan to box out.
Fish I cleaned were jam packed full of alewives. I had fish poop and blood everywhere. Unfortunately, I'd forgotten to hook up my washdown hose, so I had to get the bucket of bleach-water out when I got home. Great trip and most anglers appear to be out turkey hunting or chasing walleyes or fishing the LOC Derby. Very few boats were out for such a nice Saturday.
Day 2 of the LOC Derby and not one king salmon as of this writing has been brought in that's heavy enough to make the leaderboard (they need to be 20lbs to make the board.) Are the big kings on bait up in Canada, or are we seeing a hiccup in the Lake Ontario fishery? Time will tell....but I digress.
