Guided Kevin and his 11-year old son Tai, both from Australia. We were originally scheduled to go out on Tuesday, but the storms and heavy rains put a damper on that idea! I was wondering what the lake conditions were and how it would be fishing. I warned the guys that it could be tough. Three and a half inches of heavy rain isn't something we experience often here.
A lot of boats were out today targeting lake trout - dozens! A friend of mine was on the water early and let me know what was (and wasn't) happening where he had tried. Fishing had been slow, which was to be expected after all the rain and the blow. I was able to get my guys completely away from the crowds. We had some crystal clear water in one area and in short order Tai nabbed a fish! Mission accomplished early in the trip!
After the early success (Kevin nabbed a good fish right afterwards) we were able to move around a bit without the pressure of having to get a fish in the boat. We made a run and Tai nabbed another 3 fish. Fish today ran 22" to 26 1/2". Nothing huge, but we had decent action; we had a decent number of hits.
Lake level is at low flood stage - maybe 6" below the docks at Long Point. Water temp on top was around 40 degrees if I remember correctly. I cleaned 3 trout and they had small gobies and large alewives in their stomachs. Debris was around, but wasn't bad. The water was clearer than I expected.
We should be back in great shape for the "deep bite" next week.
