Cayuga Lake out of Long Point State Park 5/18 AM

Guided Walt for a 1/2-day trip getting underway just after 8 am.  I picked him up via boat at Dean's Cove, which is something I don't do often these days unless someone is driving from quite a ways way from the west.  Long Point to me is the most time-consuming launch to launch solo on.  There are no cleats, just large posts, and it necessitates a long line.  No matter how I launch there, something winds up eating my time - whether a rope goes under part of the trailer or I have to back up repeatedly.  Nearly every other Finger Lakes boat launch is a cinch to launch solo.

Anyhow, we mainly stayed on the west side of the lake today.  Fishing was fair.  We had decent numbers of fish relatively shallow and steady numbers out deep (around 110' to 125') today.  Walt didn't get a ton of great opportunities but he made the best of his four hookups and landed all of the fish.

After the trip, I spent just under an hour fly-fishing for lake trout.  Conditions were not good with zero wind and a high sun.  I had one laker follow me in right when I started.  Eventually I had a hit, but it wound up being a nice perch on bottom in around 20' of water.  Plenty of lake trout are shallow now and should be for the next 3 weeks at least.

The midges were thick today!  Wow, did we have midges.  A fair amount of bait was around.  Surface temps were in the low-50s in most areas we tried.

Walt's first fish of the day

Here's the second one - we kept three and they were loaded with baitfish
