Good to excellent lake trout jigging continues on Cayuga Lake, and with steady weather upon us, I don't see anything changing anytime soon! Guided Joe and his friend John for a 1/2-day trip. It didn't take too long before we were into fish. The guys had double-digit hookups including a double. Nine solid lakers were landed - most were large fish in the 27" to 30" range. We kept a bunch and they were all stuffed to the hilt with alewives.
We worked around 125' to 160' deep. Baitfish are coming in and I was marking them today. I had a change in my schedule for next week, so Thursday the 14th is now open. So open dates moving forward in May include most of next week from Sunday (Mother's Day) 5/10, the 13th, 14th and 16th. After that, the 18th, 21st, 23rd - 29th and 31st.
Some bigger salmon are finally starting to show for the LOC Derby up on Lake Ontario. There's also a 27lb lake trout leading that division as well as a 16lb brown on top for that one. In a month or so we should see or at least hear how the Lake Ontario baitfish trawls (conducted in April) went.
In other news, anglers interested in Finger Lakes landlocked salmon, lake trout and baitfish dynamics, along with a host of other interesting topics like lamprey control and forward facing sonar would enjoy clicking on YouTube and checking out the Lake Champlain State Of The Lake Meeting for 2025, which was held around a month ago.
