Cayuga Lake out of Long Point State Park 6/13 + 14 AM Trips

Guided back-to-back 1/2-day trips out of Long Point.  Here's the scoop:

6/13:  Today I had Dan and his fiancée Erin onboard.  The trip was a gift from his Grandpa and Grandma - who have been out with me a few times before, so Dan wanted me to give them a "thanks" here, since they read this website.  Weather-wise, today was probably the nicest day to be out on the lake thus far this year.  We had air temps reach close to 80 degrees, with a cool morning to start.  Light west winds made for a super comfortable day on the water.  Once we pulled back into Long Point, we could see that seemingly everyone in the area with a boat had the same idea.

The first big factor I noticed today was the start of a thermocline taking shape.  Water temps on top were in the mid-60s.  We had mid-50s down around 30' or so. Another milestone was seeing a lot more rainbows showing up north of Long Point.  I know of some that have been taken over the past month, but it's very clear that their numbers in the northern portion of the lake have increased a lot.  We also continue to see the shallow movement of alewife schools.  So the pre-summer fishing patterns are now underway.

We had a great day today with steady action from start to finish.  The fishing never got very hot and heavy, but it was never boring.  Erin started us out with a 23" wild rainbow and then Dan caught one slightly smaller.  We caught decent numbers of lake trout up to around 28" or so.  We had one double hooked up.  We were well into the double-digits for hookups and wound up with 9 nice fish landed.  Solid!

6/14 AM:  Today I guided Hunter and his brothers Gabe and Odin.  John, their father, has been bringing the boys out with me for years, starting with the oldest, Hunter and then moving right up through to 10 year old Odin, who is a heck of a young angler.  Today was a new moon - meaning a dark moon.  To me that's a great time to fish.  Fish supposedly don't feed as much at night as they do during a full-moon.  Who knows?  But for whatever reason, the new moon tends to be better fishing for lake trout than the full moon.

We started off well at around 7:15 AM with the guys putting four fish in the boat in short order.  Gabe got us started, then it was Hunter and Odin.  Our bite really slowed down a bit by 8:30.  We kept plugging away and around 10 am, some better fishing really kicked in.  the guys wound up with a solid double-digit day with one fish being a rainbow.  A nice fish or two were also dropped.

I cleaned a bunch of trout and most of them were stuffed with freshly eaten alewives.  Whether they ate them this morning, last night or yesterday, I'm not certain of - but most were fresh.  Very few boats were out today.  Yesterday was a zoo back at the ramp.

Thus far it's been a very solid lake trout year on Cayuga Lake.  I've still had to apply myself quite a bit as of late, but my two decades plus worth of experience is really paying off.  Hopefully it'll keep rolling!
