Got out here on my own for 3 hours starting at about 1:30 pm. I wanted to check out the fishing and the lake conditions. I have a trip scheduled for around this area soon, plus the tougher fishing up north necessitated some "investigating" down south. Apparently we had more rain than I thought last night, because the area around Salmon Creek and the south end of the lake were muddy.
I stayed south of Taughannock today. I checked some lake trout areas as well as some shallower areas that might hold fish. I did not encounter many lakers. Out in deeper water I landed a small one and lost another short (tail-grab) hook-up. No luck on blade-baits fishing 15' to 50' of water either. A kayak troller I talked to did catch a lake trout yesterday near his rental. The fish was around 25" from what he told me. Water temps near the south end of the lake were in the mid-50s. With these temps, you can catch trout in 5' of water as well as out deeper. I tossed a green pumpkin colored tube jig near a dock and a nice fish grabbed it. After a spirited battle, I netted a fat 20" brown trout, which I released. That was about it. We are looking at upwards of an inch of rain possible tonight, so we'll see what happens!
