Got out for a full-day trip with Mark I. Algae/clarity issues on Owasco Lake and strong southerlies on Seneca Lake made doing anything apart from Cayuga a risky proposition, so Cayuga it was. The bloom is in full-swing on Cayuga Lake. Swim areas in the State Parks have been closed. Boating traffic was light today.
We started off working some areas relatively close to the launch. Mark wanted a couple of lakers for dinner and caught his first one within a half-hour. We didn't have any other luck in our lower lake areas, so we ran north. The sun poked out and Mark had a nice little bite window; he managed to nab a couple of fish in short order including a nice 28" to 29"er. Mark's dinners were all set. After that, we had slow fishing but nabbed a fish here and a fish there on both sides of the lake. Fish numbers were pretty decent. They just were tentative, as is often the case during the bloom. The two fish I filleted had fresh alewives in their stomachs, so they were feeding last night or yesterday. Best color was black by a mile. Mark also had fish on a couple of other colors including limetreuse. One dink rainbow was also caught and released. All in all, it was fair fishing at best - not terrible, not great but not too bad. Best depths were 55' to 90'.
