I always have a lot of fun guiding Jon and Casey; they just "tied the knot" recently and wanted to get their fishing fix in. Thus far, since Jon started visiting the area and booking trips with me (first with his dad on a one-off trip a long time ago) and more recently with Casey, they've always managed to time things right. Today was a little slower than some of our past trips, but it was still a very good day!
Action started out somewhat slow but optimistically. I was tempted to make a run, but we wound up staying put. Before long, we had small laker make it to the boat. Then we had a double, another small laker and shortly thereafter, another double. Both doubles were of solid 27" to 29" lakers. Casey lost a great hook-up that was likely a big rainbow! I take the blame for that loss; 95% of the time after landing a fish, the first thing I do is double-check the knot. I also check them first thing in the morning when distributing the rods. About five percent of the time in the morning, I can break the knot with ease. After our double, I had a few distractions and failed to check Casey's set-up. The silver fish just broke the line, pure and simple. I don't even think it was right at the knot, but it was close and her leader was pretty beat up. Action slowed for us a bit as the morning went on. We started heading back to Myers and at our last stop, Jon nabbed his first Finger Lakes rainbow trout - a nice 22.5" wild fish. We dealt with a moderate shower or two, but overall the weather was good - a bit more humid than the "dry-heat" we'd been dealing with lately, but still a pleasant day on the water.
Fish came from 80' to 120' today. Angling pressure was light. Same colors produced as over the past week, although we didn't do much on Limetreuse today.
