Guided the past two days on Cayuga Lake. On both days, we were met with a lot of southerly winds and subsequent current. Fishing was generally good, but the strong winds made it difficult or unreasonable to fish certain areas.
8/23 AM: Met Nick and his grandson Jackson at the launch just before 7:30 am. Nick was out with me for a trip back on June 17th of 2016. On that full-day trip, Nick and his son Dave caught around 25 lakers and a couple of rainbows including a 30"er. Nick reminded me of that trip and told me that I'd made it clear to him back then, that that was an exceptional day and not the norm! This year hasn't featured fishing as hot as that, but it's been steady lately and more normal for what you'd expect out of a lake trout fishery. DEC has cut back lake trout stocking and natural production is down, so the chances of days like that are probably less than they used to be, although once in a while conditions converge and everything falls into place.
Nick's main focus going into the trip was that Jackson would see some action. "Action Jackson" was a toy I remember as a kid. Well, Jackson had a solid morning today landing more and bigger fish than Nick! Jackson nabbed the first fish of the day in short order and we had a pretty standard morning for late-August circa 2025. A decent couple hour bite window and then a bit of a slowdown.
