Cayuga Lake out of Myers Park 8/23 + 24 AM Trips + Website Update

Guided the past two days on Cayuga Lake.  On both days, we were met with a lot of southerly winds and subsequent current.  Fishing was generally good, but the strong winds made it difficult or unreasonable to fish certain areas.

8/23 AM:  Met Nick and his grandson Jackson at the launch just before 7:30 am.  Nick was out with me for a trip back on June 17th of 2016.  On that full-day trip, Nick and his son Dave caught around 25 lakers and a couple of rainbows including a 30"er.  Nick reminded me of that trip and told me that I'd made it clear to him back then, that that was an exceptional day and not the norm!  This year hasn't featured fishing as hot as that, but it's been steady lately and more normal for what you'd expect out of a lake trout fishery.  DEC has cut back lake trout stocking and natural production is down, so the chances of days like that are probably less than they used to be, although once in a while conditions converge and everything falls into place.

Nick's main focus going into the trip was that Jackson would see some action.  "Action Jackson" was a toy I remember as a kid.  Well, Jackson had a solid morning today landing more and bigger fish than Nick!  Jackson nabbed the first fish of the day in short order and we had a pretty standard morning for late-August circa 2025.  A decent couple hour bite window and then a bit of a slowdown.

Action Jackson is his name!

Catching lake trout is his game!

Action Jackson!

8/24 AM:  Today I picked up Roger, his wife Nancy and their daughter Allison at their rental house, basically across the lake from Myers and north.  Roger had a place up north of the Boy Scout Camp for a good decade or more.  He did a bit of copper line trolling and perch fishing in those days.  Roger is 90 years old!  He is sharp as a tack and gets around like somebody much younger.  I was very impressed.  The gals onboard don't fish much at all, so today was mostly Roger although hits were had by all and Nancy lost what was certainly a nice rainbow that took her line quite a ways away from the before before she probably knew what was going on!

Currents and wind made for some challenging boat control at times, but as the morning went on, the winds diminished a bit.

Roger hooked up

Hooked up again!

Website Issues:  As I mentioned a couple of times before, it's come to my attention (from some of you out there) that my site load time has really slowed down.  It is taking on average now 25 to 30 seconds for the homepage to load and just as much time to click onto other pages.  That's not acceptable for me.

I was going to wait until the "offseason" - that is, November through February, to deal with the issue.  I was hoping it was something minor.  It's a long story, but I was hoping that my former website designer would build me a more modern website back in 2018 or 2019 when this was constructed.  He was too busy and referred me to a guy in Eastern Europe that he's collaborated with and whose work he respects.   I did not know that he was building the website on a WordPress template and what that meant.

The guy did an excellent job with this WordPress website in terms of graphics and the design.  I have gradually learned more about WordPress and what the websites entail.  It's more or less a template and many different companies have "themes" which are is more or less templates, "plug-ins" aka, components or "sub-templates" that can help a web designer construct a better, more appropriate site for the purpose of the site.  Unfortunately, not all of the companies that designed the themes offer updates for them or are even still in business.  The major theme that this site was based around, is no longer being updated, so it is keeping the rest of the website functioning as if it were 2018 in 2025.  It'd be like running Windows 6 now.  It just doesn't work well.  I am trying to get a new theme for this website, but it's basically going to entail a site re-design.

Keep in mind, that even if this website is down (which I'm hoping it won't be...) I'll still be guiding.  So please take note of that.  I will post updates as I learn more.
