Cayuga Lake out of Myers Park 8/29 AM
Had my what has now become my annual U.N. Summit on the water today! Guided Sergey, Vesi and Ahmed for a 1/2-day trip starting just after 7:40 AM. Vesi told me about fishing the Danube River and catching pike and perch decades ago. After that, the song Blue Danube remained in my head for a while, for better or worse. A good cold front came through last night. What I generally notice after fronts, is that the lingering low cloud cover and light winds often make for good to very good fishing. Once the front blows through, the sun comes out and the winds amp up, the bite can get tough. Weather models originally had high winds for this AM, but they didn't come through until around 1pm, well after we were off of the water.
We had a solid double-digit day today, all with lake trout running 23" to 28". Most ran 23" to 26". Fish were clean (no signs of lampreys) and looking good. We had one double hooked as well. Fishing was very good, but not nearly as good as I might have expected given the sheer volume of fish that were in the areas we worked. We had a momentary hook-up from what was probably a rainbow or salmon. Dark colors reigned supreme today. None of the fish were photo worthy in terms of size, so we didn't take any pictures, but we wound up with a nice cooler full of trout. I had some Cayuga Lake lake trout last night for dinner topped with client Mark I.'s fantastic dill cucumber salad dressing (recipe is in the "Articles" section here) and with corn on the cob and it was out of this world! The dressing complements but does not over power the trout. It's really a gourmet treat!
I am down to two days open next week - Thursday and Friday September 4th and 5th, then we're looking at the 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th and 13th open for the week after. As I have mentioned before, in year's past I would mark a day or two a week as off days, before posting my availability (I also used to teach Angling/Fly-Fishing twice a week at Cornell) but this year, due to the horrible weather in May, slow bookings (understandable!) and tough fishing then, I am keeping my schedule wide-open for trips. The lakes are in great shape, the weather is top-notch and the fish are biting - that's what it's all about!
