I'd be lying if I said I wasn't happier making the 10 minute drive to Myers Park for a day on Cayuga Lake, as opposed to the 50 minute drive to fish Sampson State Park. Cayuga does feel more like home, at least in August. Today I guided Rich and his son Andrew for a full-day trip getting underway at around 7:40 am. The water here has a green tinge to it. It isn't as clear as it was a week ago, that's for sure. I don't think we're going to see another algae bloom, but it'll probably take a few cool nights to clear the lake up to where it was in late-July.
Fishing today was good with moments of very good (e.g., we had a double). We started off with some encouraging signs - the guys had follows from a nice rainbow and a large brown. A few lakers were hooked and made it to the boat. We had a lot of action from rainbow trout today - all were around 23" or smaller. We had a couple of nice 27" lakers and lastly a lot of fish dropped, especially later in the trip. It was a double-digit day and I was happy about that. I cleaned two lakers and two rainbows. Half of the fish had freshly eaten alewives in their stomachs.
The guys did a very good job with the technique and we never had any long lulls in action. We found fish everywhere we went, and we covered a lot of lake! Plenty of bait was around as well.
This week is all booked up. I have Saturday and Sunday the 15th and 16th open, then we're looking at the 19th + 20th, 22nd, 24th - 29th and 31st. I expect good to excellent fishing here on Cayuga Lake with plenty of bonus rainbows and a few browns in the mix. Some salmon are around, but not many.
