Guided Oleg, his son Val and Val's wife Hana for a short 1/2-day trip getting underway at around 12:45 pm. It was another gorgeous day on the lake, but today we had to contend with some pretty decent south winds to start. They were probably gusting into the upper-teens and low-20s. The wind-sports enthusiasts were out and very few trailer/rigs were parked at Myers.
We fished mid-lake areas. Hana and Val live out in California and she does quite a bit of ocean fishing. Sure enough, she got the first hook-up, a nice 30.5" laker that was in great condition, but it did have a big lamprey that appeared to be freshly attached. Lamprey is a delicacy and Oleg took it to eat later. After we were out for maybe a half hour, Oleg told me that we needed to be back at Myers Park at 4 pm so Val and Hana could go work online. That didn't leave us a whole lot of time, but fortunately everybody caught a fish and then we got into a great bite window at around 3 pm. Before long, we had more than enough fish to take home! I think we nabbed 7 mostly big lakers (2 @ 30.5" and a few more at 27" to 28"!) Our fish were all caught in around 2.5 hours, so it was in line with what I like to see on Cayuga Lake this time of year.
It was great to have some fairly "easy" fishing on Cayuga Lake. Fishing has generally been good in August and into September, but usually it's great. Today was a lot closer to great than good. Hopefully this will be more the norm over the next couple of months.
