Cayuga Lake out of Taughannock Park 3/4 PM

Got out today with Jack for a 1/2 day trip starting at around 12:30 pm.  There was very little ice remaining in the Taughannock Marina.  Word is from Angling Zone friend Bob, is that Long Point has one launchable slip and the others should be good to go shortly - the remaining ice is pretty weak.  Tomorrow's rain should bring up the lake and melt the remaining ice around mid-lake boat launches.

We went out of Taughannock instead of Long Point, since I wasn't sure if Long Point would be launchable.  No matter how you look at things, Cayuga Lake remains very low.  Better to be safe than sorry and use trolling motor power when in doubt of the depth.  We didn't need to venture to Long Point today, fishing was superb out of Taughannock.  Jack makes my life easy when the fish are biting - he keeps a limit and then we call it a day, after maybe a little bit of catch and release.  He had his limit of fine lake trout today (fish running around 26" to 27") in around 90 minutes.  After about two hours of fishing, we headed back in!

The fish were in decent condition.  A couple had some old lamprey marks, but the rest were clean.  We fished around 90' out to 135' for what it's worth.  The regular plastics worked great.

I've mentioned this before, but Jack is a terrific writer and historian.  His book about the lore and history around Oneida Lake is a great read with lots of rare photos. There is a lot of fishing related history as well. He talks about the fishing guides in the late-1800s and early-1900s, along with some of their catches that made the local newspapers.  The fish pirates and some of the characters on the lake and around it are also described.  It is well researched!  I would love to see a book like that about Seneca or Cayuga Lakes so I could answer questions about what some of the old pilings were originally there for and so forth.  I highly recommend Jack Henke's book(s) and they can be found on Amazon.

Jack on! The smile says it all - it's been a long winter and it's great to see and feel the sun and a good fish hooked up!

Landlocked salmon fishing is well underway - I have some good dates available during this warm spell:  I have Friday, Saturday, and Wednesday open.  Those all look to be top-notch days to salmon fish, and I can do lake trout as well if the winds aren't bad.
