Otisco Lake 6/5 AM
Got out here for a 1/2 day fly-fishing trip for tiger muskies with Fred and his brother Matt. Both have joined me in the past for laker trips. If I said we had any semblance of good conditions today, I'd be lying. We had next to no wind and very little cloud cover. So much for the forecast of showers and possible thunderstorms. Whatever wind was in the forecast stayed high about the lake. I think the wind finally came up in the afternoon, long after we were gone. All that being said, the lake looked great with clear water and plenty of pondweed. The lake level is high and you have to be careful taking your time going through the causeway. The concrete abutments are covered with water. Water temperatures ran from 65 to nearly 70 degrees today - this lake heats up fast.
Action was very slow for tigers. We started pretty early - at 6:30 am to try and mitigate the conditions. The guys pretty much cast their arms off with the musky fly-gear. Fred picked up a nice bass and good sized perch, but no follows from muskies for either of the guys on the streamers. Fred eventually went to a stickbait and spoon. He had a follow from a small tiger around 22". He also hooked a very nice bass on a spoon - probably close to 19" or 20", but it got off. He also lost a solid hook-up around some deeper weeds. It was likely a big bass or perhaps a mid-twenties inch tiger musky from what I could tell. We did see a bald eagle and a pair of loons, which was surprising. Fishing pressure and boat traffic was fairly light while we were out.
