Seneca Lake 7/12

Guided my old friend Chris and his son Brian for close to a full-day today getting underway just after 6:30 am.  There is a major Ironman Triathlon taking place here tomorrow (on Sunday 7/13) so keep that in mind if traveling through this area (Geneva) or fishing here.  I've had Brian out with Chris since he was a youngster at maybe 10 or 11 years old  - now he's 28 years old!  He has fished all over the Adirondack Region and had lived up there for 3 years.  He's done and seen some pretty cool stuff - ice fishing steelhead in small creeks (!);  he's watched burbot spawning in a bay in Lake Champlain and he even landed a bowfin in Irondequoit Creek up near Panorama Plaza - which is something I never did, despite fishing there often over a long period of time.  He's seriously thinking about guiding in the future - perhaps in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota or maybe the Adirondacks.  Who knows at this point - that's the great thing about life and being young, you never know where you'll end up and what you may be doing.

We had a slow, but decent steady bite today.  The full moon definitely seems to be playing into it - a couple of the four fish that I filleted at the end of our trip were loaded with freshly eaten alewives.  The guys had double-digit hookups, but Chris landed most of his hookups and Brian dropped quite a few.  It happens!  A small bass tournament was going on and I talked to a couple of the guys on one boat after they pulled in.  They reported good fishing for both smallmouths and largemouths - although mostly smallies.  They also landed one healthy looking northern pike.  The water here is still very clear.

No reports on Cayuga Lake from the past couple of days.  The algae bloom is making some news, but as I drove by overlooking the lake, it didn't look terribly green.

Chris on!

His first fish was a dink, but this one's pretty nice!

Brian with one

Here's another....

Some nice looking fillets! You've got to love that color!
