Guided Ron here for a full-day starting at 6:30 am. I wanted an early start to beat the heat, which was forecast to hit close to 100 degrees today. We have a full-moon and over the past couple of days the laker action has been great. I believe that the cloud cover helped. Today we had cloudless skies in the morning and the fish bit good to start but the hot action began to peter out after 2 hours or so. Ron still had a great double-digit day with lots of hook-ups. No non-lakers today and nearly every fish was a stocked one. No lampreys or recent wounds on fish either.
We did some bass fishing and Ron caught a handful of largemouths and one good smallmouths. He also caught his first goby. We found some smallmouths in fairly shallow water eating round gobies. Others have been looking up feeding on alewives. I plan on exploring more bass fishing here shortly.
Seneca Lake is still pretty clear but there was some dark water along the east shore and in parts of the west shore.
July and August (along with September) are great months here for peak lake trout action as well as good bass action. I'm enjoying the bass fishing here. The tournament pressure is probably 10% of what Cayuga's is. The gobies haven't yet decimated the bass fishing and it's pretty good.
It was very, very hot today and I went through at least three quarts of water and Ron and I both did a bit of hat dipping! It looks like the heat clears out this weekend. Boat traffic was light today with a few jet skis, tubers and water-skiers; not too many anglers were out. My availability remains good going into the summer. This is a great time to fish Seneca Lake!
