Seneca Lake out of Watkins Glen 3/30

Guided Mark I. for a full-day trip starting just after 9 am.  Lake levels are great and water temperatures were around 39 degrees on the surface.  Mark spent a lot of the day casting spinning gear, but he also worked the fly-rod as well.  I had some new fly-patterns that I wanted him to try.  Overall we had a very solid day of fishing.  Most fish came on gear, but a few came on the flies.  Mark nabbed a bunch of salmon up to around 20".  We did not have any large salmon in the mix today.  He nabbed a couple of rainbows - one was small but the other was around 22" to 23" (it flipped out of my hands and into the water when I was trying to measure it, although we did get a photo,) and he also caught a laker around 24" to 25".

The big takeaway on the day was that a lot of salmon were bottom oriented and feeding on young gobies.  Mark harvested his 20" salmon and the lake trout.  The salmon had three to four small gobies in its stomach.  I will be bringing some fast sinking fly set-ups on my next fly-fishing trip here.  Fish can be taken in a lot of ways, since I do believe salmon strongly prefer alewives over gobies.  Alewives also appeared to be moving in shallower in some areas.

Nice healthy post-spawn female rainbow!

We have the potential for a lot of rain over the next few days.  We'll see what transpires.  Hopefully, we'll wind up on the lighter side of the predictions.  Expect all of the local lakes to soon be at full-pool or even a low flood level depending on what we receive.
