Seneca Lake out of Watkins Glen 4/17 AM

Guided Larry and his wife Jenn today for a half-day trip starting at 9:30 am.  We had foggy conditions and a decent north wind to start.  For the first hour of the trip, we stayed close to the south end of the lake until the fog cleared.  Fishing there was slow.  We had a lot of muddy water.  Once the fog blew out, we were able to fish in some better looking water.

Seneca Lake currently has a LOT of fishy looking green water.  With all the rain we have had, the water is high with some debris (we are starting to see various plant buds and other signs of spring in the water.)  Fish do not appear to be nearly as concentrated as they were over the past 5+1/2 months, but there are still castable and fly-castable numbers around.

Larry had a good hook-up that got off.  We worked several different areas.  Eventually we got into some smaller salmon.  Larry picked up a nice brown to start things off.  A couple 14.5" to 16" salmon followed.  Jenn doesn't fish much at all, but once she got rolling with her casting, she started getting hits.  After a quick break, Jenn hooked up with a nice 20" salmon that made the day for us.  Some other hits were also had before we called it a half-day.

After the trip, I went out and tried some fly-fishing with a new set-up that I think will be productive.  I had a good amount of hits given the paucity of fish in the area I worked (I stayed closer to Watkins due to the wind.)  I nabbed a hard-hitting 16"er and had a hold of a couple others on the fly in my 2 hours spent relatively close to the launch.  Given what I saw, I can say I know that set-up will work!
