Cayuga Lake out of Myers Park 7/28 AM

Reports

It felt awfully nice driving to Myers Park today instead of over to Owasco Lake or Seneca Lake for lake trout.  Myers is about a 10 minute drive for me and is only a few miles from where I live.  I haven’t been on Cayuga Lake in 2+1/2 weeks.  It’s felt like a month and a half!  During the past couple weeks I’ve been in touch with anglers fishing the lake.  The worst part of the bloom was around two and a half weeks ago and lasted maybe one week.  High winds and some cool nights have really made this year’s bloom much milder than some of those of years’ past.  It’s kind of odd, because this summer has been very hot thus far and we have had a decent amount of heavy rain.

Yesterday’s tough fishing was a bit of an anomaly on Owasco Lake.  Cayuga Lake was also tough although some anglers did well.  I would bet that today was good on Owasco Lake as well.  Fish eat.  That’s what they do! Tough for them to stay lock-jawed for long.

A lot of boats were out on Cayuga Lake today both jigging and trolling.  Water fleas seem down and I didn’t notice any weedmats, so it is a great time to troll for a nice mixed bag.  Friends have gotten into some salmon this year and rainbow fishing has been good.  Brown trout are doing better than they were over the past two years.

Today I had Lucien, his son Nick and Nick’s buddy Colin.  Lou has a place on Owasco Lake and also encountered tougher fishing yesterday over there.  He fished Cayuga Lake years ago and wanted to give it a shot.  We started just after 6:30 am not far from Myers.  In short order Colin was into fish.  Nick and Colin actually doubled up fairly quickly.  Within the first hour or so, around 4 fish had been landed.  We wound up having a double-digit day.  A few rainbows followed jigs up, but no hook-ups.  Fish seem a bit thin and some were kind of “soft” if that makes sense. I do believe that the lakers really slow down feeding during the bloom.  Our results when fishing certainly confirm that!  Water temps are also warm on Cayuga Lake.  We had a lot of our luck from 90′ to around 120′ today.

Great way to start the day! But The fishing did slow down about midway through the trip.

Nice going guys! Both fish to the net, handled well and released quickly!

Another one for Nick

We will see what happens with the bloom.  We are in somewhat uncharted territory here.  Visibility today pretty much everywhere we fished – from Myers north to around King Ferry/Atwater on both sides, was good – probably around 4′ to 5′.  Clarity on the south end was good yesterday according to a friend.  Clarity was good south of Long Point yesterday according to another report.  There are still particulates in the water.   White was probably the best color today although Limetreuse was a close second.

Owasco Lake has a bit of a bloom starting.  We’ll see what happens there too!  My availability still remains pretty good for August.  I am hoping to fish a bit on my own then too;  I’m looking forward to it.
