Lake Ontario/Henderson Harbor 9/27 + Cayuga Lake 9/29 AM

Reports

Lake Ontario/Henderson Harbor out of Westcott Beach State Park: My plan with Terry was to fish the St. Lawrence/Thousand Islands Region for bass for a couple days but with the weather forecast and other issues (mainly work) we decided to spend just one day fishing out of Henderson. I hadn’t fished out here in at least 3 or 4 years – the last time was with my buddy Mike (who had been catching some good bass here lately) so I was psyched to give it a shot.

We started at 7:30 am with some good south winds. In shallow water off of a shoal Terry had a 20″ walleye crush a spinnerbait next to the boat. We struggled trying to find bass on the shoals. We eventually found a few but caught more in a community hole and in the harbor itself around sand and grass. Not a stellar day by any means but we landed around 9 smallmouths and each dropped a few good ones in the upper 3 to 4lb range. Most were in the 14″ to 16″ range. We did not catch the 4 and 5lbers we were hoping for. There was an plankton bloom going on. The bay looked more like Oneida Lake than typical Lake Ontario Fish hit tube jigs, dropshot rigs and jerkbaits.

Cayuga Lake out of Myers 9/29 AM: Guided Bernie and his father, also named Bernie for lakers. Cayuga Lake continues to fish very well – I’ve been pleasantly surprised, since usually I am fishing out of Long Point by now. But the lakers keep hitting. We had a very solid half day with Bernie (the IIIrd) starting things off with a mature salmon that was nearly 27″ long! He then landed a 30″ laker. Both guys wound up landing 4 fish each – mostly solid lake trout in the 26″ to 27″ range with a couple around 22″ to 23″. Some fish are ready to spawn and a couple have actually looked spawned out. Netting starts on Monday.
