Cayuga Lake out of Long Point 4/11 AM
Guided Gary and his friend Charlie for a half day. It’s easy to miss the Long Point State Park and the guys wound up blowing right past it (!) so we wound up starting at 8:45 am instead of 8 am. The winds managed to stay down and we had no problem getting the trip in. Unfortunately, the murky water from the heavy rains on the early morning of the 6th have wound up spreading out throughout the lake. My friend Todd was out on Easter Sunday and he reported very tough fishing. They were able to locate some clearer water and managed a hit or two, but overall it was much tougher than what we experienced on Saturday and previously.
I didn’t like what I was seeing, so after maybe 45 minutes of no action, we made a long run. We wound up finding some clear water and salvaged what might have wound up being a very tough day. The guys landed 4 solid fish – two that went 27″ and 28″ and a couple younger ones around 20″ to 21″. A few were lost as well. Sometimes you can tough things out in the murk, but with deep early season lake trout, it oftentimes doesn’t pay off. That being said, some schools of baitfish were starting to move in. Once the water clears up, the fishing should be excellent, with a capital “E” as Dick Vitale would say!
