Cayuga Lake out of Myers Park 8/5 AM
Guided Mark I. and his wife Jane for a 1/2-day trip. Well the big news is that the algae bloom is back and “better than ever.” Fishing has slowed down a lot on Cayuga Lake. In addition, the weedmats and waterfleas are back in droves. The good news is that the cold front and winds coming after tonight and tomorrow should dissipate the bloom in fairly short order. We generally have good fishing during the bloom if the water visibility is around 3′ to 4′. Today we had maybe 15″! Jane had the first hookup today and I would’ve had the fish in the net, but I couldn’t see it! It was right near the surface but invisible. For some reason, the hook just pulled out – she didn’t do anything wrong. Hindsight is 20/20, but knowing what I know now, I would’ve taken a blind swipe at it! At least she had fun fighting the fish. We will get some redemption, hopefully in a few weeks!
Mark managed to land two fish, which is what he wanted to take home for the grill. He shared a recipe for a dressing that you pour on cooked fish just before serving. I bought the ingredients for it today and am looking forward to trying it. It’s an old family recipe that is versatile. It was originally a salad dressing and is superb when mixed with fresh cucumbers, as a “cucumber salad.”
We definitely had some bites and short hookups from what were likely rainbows. Fish we caught came from around 90′ to maybe 120′. The algae was bad lakewide as far as I could tell.
